It was first officially settled in 1657 by Thomas Rogers and has since been promoted as a tourist destination. The downtown Old Orchard Beach contains many tourist oriented businesses including souvenir shops, beach residential properties, condominiums, motels and beds and breakfasts.
The seven-mile long stretch of beautiful sandy shores, a beachside amusement park and golfing and nightlife on the Pier, make Old Orchard Beach a favorite with the outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. Though daytime activities are numerous and interesting in Pier, the place becomes more vibrant and lively at night with live music, dance parties and drink specials. It also hosts fireworks every Thursday night during the summer. Similarly, the Palace Playland, New England’s only beachfront amusement park, is very popular among the kids. With over 25 rides and attractions including the giant arcade, beautiful carousel, kiddieland, Gondola Ferris Wheel and Galaxi Coaster, the play land has everything to keep the smaller kids busy during their vacation. If the kids want more fun and amusement, take them to Funtown/Splashtown. It is within the walking distance from Old Orchard Beach.
