Westbrook, Maine

Originally called Stroudwater, the town was incorporated in 1814 as Westbrook in honor of early settler, Colonel Thomas Westbrook.

The Presumpscot River flows through town, making Westbrook a prime location for early industry. Mills soon sprung up along the banks and inspired the construction of a series of canals that linked Portland to Harrison. These canals were used to transport raw materials and products throughout the region. Today, the canals welcome fishermen, canoeists and other outdoor enthusiasts.

From the mid-1800s to present day, the paper industry continues to provide jobs for a skilled labor force. Built upon the success of Westbrook's mills, the town boasts a thriving industrial park and is headquarters for leaders in the areas of construction, insurance and biotechnology.

Along the water's edge, the Main Street houses a variety of shops, offices and restaurants.

Recreation is easily accessible within the town limits from strolls along the Westbrook River Walk through the Riverbank and Bicentennial Parks. As you leave the interior of the town, the historical buildings and flat streets give way to rolling hills where it's easy to find a public golf course.

Westbrook also offers several libraries and a theatre to round out its appeal.
